DRIPPING SPRINGS SKatepark is closer to REALITY

With the approval of Hays County park bond funds by the Hays County Commissioners Court and the approval of an interlocal agreement by the Dripping Springs City Council, the Dripping Springs Skatepark is closer to becoming a reality. Earlier this month, the City Council voted to enter an interlocal agreement with Hays County, the Dripping Springs Community Foundation (DSCF), and DS Skatepark, Inc.

Hays County approved $624,250 in park bond funds to be given to the DSCF to use in construction of the skatepark. The skatepark was one of the recommended projects to be funded by the Hays County park bond that passed in 2020.

A Skatepark for DRIPPING SPRINGS

The Drip Skateboarding movement began in 2014 with lessons offered through what is now known as the DSISD Community Services. In 2017, the local movement began to gain momentum, and attention turned towards finding a space in the area for a permanent place to board. That year, the Dripping Springs City Council approved a skatepark proposal put forth by Baldwin and others, creating the Skatepark Exploratory Committee. In 2019, the city entered a license agreement with the skatepark, allowing its construction on a 1.5- acre tract of land on the north end of Founders Memorial Park — an area with pre-existing access to water, bathrooms and parking.

Since 2015, the Dripping Springs Skatepark Initiative has been fundraising and spreading awareness about the need for the park. So far, a fifth of the total funding needed has been raised. With an estimated cost of $500,000, the committee knows a firm completion date for the project is still up in the air, but they’re hoping summer 2021 if funding goals are met.

Supporters of a proposed skateboard park in Hays County will ask city council members on Tuesday to support the project by teaming up to apply for grants for construction. “Together, I think we’d be a stronger force to make this happen,” said Dripping Springs’ Parks and Community Services director Kelly Schmidt. She’ll advocate on behalf of the partnership Tuesday.

Neighborhood note: Dripping Springs Skatepark plan moves forward

DS Skatepark Inc. and the city of Dripping Springs completed a donation agreement in May for the future Dripping Springs Skatepark, set to be located at the north end of Founders Memorial Park. The agreement allows DS Skatepark Inc. to raise funds and move ahead collaborating with designers on the park. The group, which has been adopted by Dripping Springs Community Foundation as fiscal sponsorship, will have three years to complete the 12,000-square-foot project and will donate the park to the city upon completion.
